It all started with a vision. I wanted to build a large format light box from my small models knowing it would be gorgeous if done right. The journey to bring this vision to life was an exciting one, filled with challenges and triumphs. In this post, I’ll take you through the step-by-step process of creating my first large format light box.
Step 1: Frame Construction
The first challenge was to build a sturdy frame for my light box. I carefully ripped the wood needed for the frame, ensuring my measurements were accurate. Next, I used pocket holes to securely attach the sides together, This method offered stability, durability and a clean finish, setting a strong foundation for the project.
Step 2: Sanding – The Grind Begins
Sanding – the part that separates the jokers from the jester. I began with a coarse 60-grit sandpaper, determined to smooth out any rough surfaces and imperfections. Slowly, I progressed to finer grits, moving from 80 to 120 and finally reaching a glass-like finish with 300 grit. This step required patience, but I knew it would be worth it in the end.

Step 3: Priming and Lacquering
To achieve the smooth, glossy finish I had in mind, I had to go through the priming and lacquering process. I sprayed numerous coats of black primer onto the frame, ensuring complete coverage. After letting each coat dry, with a light sanding in between, I gave the frame a final sanding with crumpled 300-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and even surface. Then came the moment of truth – applying several coats of black lacquer, which gave the frame a beautiful shine.
Step 4: Assembling the Light Box
With the frame finished, I was ready to start assembling the light box itself. Each layer was inserted with a plywood spacer or riser in between. This step was crucial to ensure even light distribution and prevent any unwanted hotspots or shadows.
Step 5: Adding Reflective Tape and LED Lighting
The final touches involved maximizing the brightness of my light box. I coated the backboard with reflective tape, allowing the light to be evenly distributed. The pièce de résistance was the installation of the LED lighting system. Making sure the LEDs were spaced and aligned evenly was a meticulous process. Once I connected the power and hit the switch, the entire light box lit up beautifully, showcasing my design in all its glory.

In the end, the journey to create my first large format light box was a labor of love, a project filled with precision, creativity, and the satisfaction of turning a vision into a reality. My new light box not only showcases my artwork but also illuminates the passion and dedication I poured into its creation.
